Preservation
Priorities
Each year, the citizens of Springfield recognize five sites as
irreplaceable community assets that represent our rich history and
provide our community with its unique sense of place and
identity. This third annual list recognizes buildings and sites that
are significant architecturally, illustrate an element of our social
and cultural history, or contribute significantly to the course of
local, state, or national history. Being declared a preservation
priority does not guarantee action, or even protection, but is
designed to increase awareness and understanding of each site’s
importance. It is our sincere hope that some of these properties may
one day join the ranks of recent preservation success stories like the
Westcott House, Heritage Center, and Pennsylvania House.
Friends of Snyder Park
Our Snyder Park Advisory Committee is working to preserve and protect
Snyder Park's historic character and re-establish the park as a
viable community asset for future generations. This group,
comprising seven appointed community members, oversees public policy
and education initiatives for the park and administers funds from
the newly created Snyder Park Preservation Fund at the Springfield
Foundation.
Annual Preservation Awards
The Springfield Preservation Awards recognize the best revitalization
and preservation achievements in Springfield, Ohio. Entries should
reflect creativity, innovation, and passion for community growth.
Anyone is welcome to submit nominations, which are reviewed by the
Alliance’s Awards Committee. The Springfield Preservation Alliance
announces recipients at their Annual Meeting in May.
Preservation Plan
A coalition of
twelve organizations partnered in 2006 to begin working on a new
Preservation Plan for the City of Springfield. This group hired the
help of noted preservation consultants Benjamin D. Rickey & Co. assist
in the plan's formation. After two years in development, including
dozens of focus group interviews and public workshops, the Springfield
Preservation Alliance is pleased to announce their endorsement of this
important plan. We will now work to implement our aspects of the plan
and proactively promote the adoption of the plan by the City of
Springfield. A digital copy of the plan will soon be available on our
website.
College Hill Historic District Nomination
The Springfield Preservation Alliance is currently working on a
National Register nomination for the College Hill neighborhood in
Springfield. The National Register of Historic Places is the United
States' official list of districts, sites, buildings, and structures
deemed worthy of preservation. Of the more than one million
properties on the National Register, 80,000 are listed individually.
The remainder are contributing members within historic districts.
Each year, approximately 30,000 properties are added to the National
Register.

Springfield Preservation Endowment Fund
Help support the movement to recognize, preserve, and revitalize
Springfield’s architectural and cultural heritage by donating to the
Springfield Preservation Endowment Fund. It is our goal to raise $10,000 by
December 2010. We are currently
over halfway to our goal. This fund, housed and administered by the
Springfield Foundation, is designed to be a grant-giving vehicle
for preservation advocacy and education. Once we meet our goal,
the fund will dispense yearly grants to individuals and organizations to help
support local preservation.

This Place Matters! Campaign
The National Trust for Historic
Preservation program This Place Matters! is designed to raise
awareness about the power historic preservation has to protect and
enhance our homes, neighborhoods and communities — the places that
really matter to us. It provides an opportunity to celebrate
Springfield's diverse and unique heritage and enables all of us to
become involved in the growing preservation movement.
