Bicycle tours, new to this year’s series, examine topics
not feasible on regular walking tours. These tours last approximately two
hours and cover four to six miles at a leisurely pace. Tours utilize our
wonderful bicycle paths and side streets whenever possible. You are required
to bring your own bicycle. Helmets are recommended, but not required. Rain
dates are the following day at 1 pm.

Westcott and the Progressive Era

The Westcotts moved to Springfield in 1903 during
a period of social and aesthetic reform known as the Progressive Era. Join
us on this bicycle tour as we explore the world of
Burton
and Orpha Westcott from 1903 to the mid-1920s, including associated houses
and factories, architecture influenced by the
Prairie
School, and the City Beautiful park
concepts envisioned for
Greenmount
Cemetery. Meet outside the

Mid-Century Modern West
Saturday, July 16 at 10 am • Guided by Kevin Rose
Local architects like Lloyd Zeller, John Kline, and Phil Snyder reimagined
the post-World War II urban landscape with leek efficient modern designs,
some of which garnered national recognition. Join us on this bicycle tour as
we rediscover some of Springfield’s best mid-century modern designs,
including the George and Frieda McCann House, Columbia Gas Building, and
Bauhaus-inspired Building X at Crowell-Collier. Meet outside Key Bank at 1 South Fountain Avenue on your bicycle.
