Our History
Established in 2003, the Springfield Preservation Alliance grew out of a
community-based effort to recognize, preserve, and revitalize the
architectural and cultural heritage of Springfield, Ohio.
Recognizing Springfield’s need for a grassroots effort to save its
historic resources as a means of economic and cultural growth, an advisory
group of twelve individuals gathered on September 9, 2003 to discuss the
formation of a local preservation organization. The name “Springfield
Preservation Alliance” was temporarily adopted as it represented the group
as an alliance of citizens with a fundamental belief in preservation. This
group grew over the next seven advisory meetings to include support and
leadership from across Springfield.
In December 2003, the newly formed Alliance sponsored their first educational event,
History Hymns & Holly, with three other local organizations. Throughout
January and February of 2004, the group developed their Certificate of
Incorporation and Constitutional Bylaws. On March 10, 2004 the Incorporators
of the Alliance signed the new organization’s Certificate of Incorporation
and soon after filed with the State of Ohio. The new group elected its first
board on April 15 and held their first official board meeting a week later. During the summer of
2004, the Alliance held Springfield's first Summer Walking Tour Series. Since that time, the
Preservation Alliance has held numerous educational events, worked
proactively to protect and promote historic landmarks, and pushed a smart
growth agenda in local policy efforts.
